Understanding Your Skin Type

The Foundation of Your Glow

Identifying your skin type is the absolute first step in building a routine that actually works. Using the wrong products—like heavy oils on oily skin or harsh foams on dry skin—can trigger breakouts, redness, or premature aging.

Here is the breakdown of the four primary skin types and how to identify yours.

The "Watch and Wait" Test

To find your type, wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and leave it bare for 30 minutes. Do not apply any serums or moisturizers.

1. Oily Skin

  • The Look: Visible shine all over the face, especially by midday.

  • The Feel: Greasy to the touch; pores appear enlarged or "clogged."

  • The Goal: Balance. Look for niacinamide and lightweight, oil-free gel moisturizers.

2. Dry Skin

  • The Look: Flaking, redness, or a dull complexion.

  • The Feel: Tight, itchy, or "parched," especially after cleansing.

  • The Goal: Hydration and Barrier Repair. Focus on hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and rich cream-based moisturizers.

3. Combination Skin

  • The Look: Shine in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) while cheeks remain matte or dry.

  • The Feel: A mix of oiliness and tight patches.

  • The Goal: Targeted Care. Use lightweight hydration overall but treat the T-zone with clarifying ingredients like salicylic acid if needed.

4. Normal Skin

  • The Look: Even tone, small pores, and a natural radiance.

  • The Feel: Smooth and comfortable—neither too oily nor too tight.

  • The Goal: Maintenance. Focus on antioxidants (like Vitamin C) and SPF to protect your natural balance.

A Note on Sensitive Skin: > Sensitivity is often a skin condition rather than a type. If your skin reacts with stinging or burning to most products, look for "fragrance-free" and "hypoallergenic" labels regardless of your base type.

The Golden Rule

Your skin type can change with the seasons, your diet, and age. Check in with your skin every six months to ensure your "Studio Valure" rituals are still serving your current needs.
